It began simply enough. It was a Friday, as much like any other Friday. The circuits of the great machine began their hum with anticipation. Somewhere, deep in the tangled wiring harness of this reality, an artifact had been scheduled for storage. The air was heavy with the charged expectancy of the day's events. Every onlooker living their personal, desperate edge of now. For soon, it was hoped, would come the complex interweaving of valves and gears that brought forth respite from the diseased madness of this time - a mechanical ballet of utmost precision, locking in the smooth spirals of a high-fidelity polymer disc. The sequence would complete itself and, in doing so, would complete us. As it always had.

On Bandcamp Friday, a system tilts in your favor. No corporate siphons, no faceless middlemen extracting residuals. Just you. Just us. The direct exchange of value tokens for the promise of physical sonic density.

We said we'd do some updates on gamesdev didn't we?

For those that don't know our madness, we're working on a videogame that will be tangentially related to our upcoming album. It's a run through some vignettes of 90s retro games such as Afterburner, Desert Strike and Super Thunder Blade. You can catch our teaser trailer a little further down our insta.

Lately we've been working a lot on the Desert Strike inspired part of the game, trying to add some features that lead to more depth in the world. With that in mind, we spent some time working on getting GPU instanced destructible grass in with the intention of making a beautiful landscape that then gets scarred by the ravages of war.

Unity makes it pretty straightforward to update per-instance GPU data and it makes this kind of effect quite easy to pull off. It'd be neat to add some fires that spread and cause further damage, maybe something particle system based. These sorts of interactions can really help to sell the world as real and alive.

We've also been putting in other landscape objects like trees. They're not quite there yet, the wind animations are a little wonky - we've mainly been focused on getting the trees to sway more when your chopper is overhead but the procedural animation is super basic at present - it needs to act more like a spring so we'll spend some time working on getting that looking nice. Some kind of particle effect for "wind streaks" to show the downforce of the rotor blades would help to sell the effect more.

The tree animations pose an interesting problem in that we have to distribute the update of the animations over many frames with a coroutine so that we can support a large number of tree objects. They're spatially partitioned so we can keep the number of updating objects to a minimum, but we intend there to be a lot of trees, so getting it performant is tricky. Whilst the leaves on the trees are GPU instanced, doing vertex wiggle in the shader doesn't look as convincing as physically moving the parts of the tree in the transform because we're after a more exaggerate sort of swaying, so that's what we've stuck with for now.

Toying with emergent behaviours and little world details for the apache section of our game - I like the idea of different alert levels for areas, so if you catch an airbase off guard the little pilots come running out to get to their choppers.

Bit of dodginess in the sprite animations, nothing that a bit of spit and polish won't sort. Trying to keep to that Genesis era minimal spritesheet look, it's got so much character.

The album itself drops early next year, and we'll put this thing out in some sort of state around the same time - perhaps with a patreon if people want to get some behind the scenes looks at how we made both the music video and the game? Maybe even support turning it into something larger in scope.

Over the past year we've been working away on a digital pedal platform that we can use to make cool pedal experiments. Perhaps even to produce short runs of pedals for our merch store. Here's a little peek at our work in progress "Baby Janky". It's a digital recreation of our Janky Tape Echo machine.

This uses a combination of neural networks, sampling and physical modelling to recreate the sound of our Janky Tape Echo pedal digitally - and we've gone to some pretty extreme lengths to recreate the sound as accurately as possible. We think there's still some elements that can be improved, but it's sounding pretty good we reckon!

Next we'll stick it into a 3D printed case to look like a mini copy of the full sized machine and see how that looks, gotta have some little decorative baby reels on it!

Would anybody be interested in one of these little things, assuming we made a few to stick up on the store?

We'll also be making the hardware open source, once we've road tested it and worked out the kinks and written up some tutorials, so you can try making your own digital effects.

It feels appropriate to take a moment to thank @tmhillyy and @thebookhousestudio for how ridiculously professional, supportive and competent they have been throughout the sessions for this album production. I don't think we could have been in better hands, and I don't think we would have wanted to work with anyone else.

From here we're taking some time to finish up putting together the Janky kit pre-orders and working on some more pedally prototypingy things.
